How to Build an E-Commerce Photography Portfolio at Home!

How to Build an
E-Commerce Photography Portfolio at Home!

Whether you are a
photography student or someone who is starting out your own business selling
products on Amazon, eBay and Etsy, you only need a little space at home to get
things going!

First, you would need a
table, even better if you have a foldable one to save some space. I have been
doing photography for over 16 years ranging from Weddings, Events, Portraits,
Headshots, Food, Properties, Live Sports etc. etc. so I already have quite a
lot of photography backdrops and backdrop supports, but I found out that there
are a lot you can get on Amazon and eBay these days. I’ve listed an example
link here
. I’m
not sponsored by this product and have not used it myself, but I liked the idea
of the light box with a built-in light for a fraction of the cost and it will
save a lot of space too.

Mind
you, there seem to be a lot of similar products on Amazon too, so please do
your own research :)

You can also find a set
of lights, or you could have your set up in front of a window to get lots of
natural light and be creative with shadows.

Also, it would make
things much easier if you mount your camera on a tripod, then you have two
hands free to play with your products and hold up a reflector if you need to. I
have created a couple of stop-motion commercials using the tripod as I needed
to create a sequence of photographs, and the results were brilliant!!

From luxury cosmetics
brand La Mer to prestigious designer Christian Dior and of course, British
brand Beanz Means Heinz. You can play as though you were Andy Warhol…. but with
a tin of beans ;)

Sadly I wasn’t
commissioned to work for these amazing brands but these were things I already
had around the house. The only thing I needed to do was to lay them out,
compose them nicely and then match the colours. I wanted to create a good set
of colourful photos for my portfolio. When you are not sure about how to match
the colours, it’s easy, just pick one main colour from each product. It doesn’t
even need to be the dominant colour. For example, with this tin of Heinz beans
I picked black rather than picking the main theme of the turquoise colour

I worked with this vegan
cosmetic brand, Gen-See Beauty, and they were thrilled with my creations

Another fun example to
show is this Trek protein bar. How many bars did I have to buy? Hmm…the
answer is only 1! Yes, I took a cut-out picture of one bar and then I cloned
them all, haha!!

A tip I can give you
when you do this type of product photography, in general, is to be on a high
f-stop as it makes a clean cut of the product

I caught a cold recently
and had to get some Lemsip products. I loved the colour of them, blazing red
and green, and they look gorgeous in my work!

I take E-Commerce jobs
worldwide, so if anyone would like to collaborate for a fee, please get in
touch and send me the products!

I’m also an artist and
have been sharing my street photography on Instagram and LinkedIn for a long
time, so please check me out there too to see my creativity!

Keep creating, clicking
and stay tuned!
