My Tips for Wedding Photography at the Guildhall Windsor
October 22, 2025Capturing the Magic: Wedding Photography at the Guildhall Windsor
If you’re planning your wedding at the Guildhall Windsor, you’re choosing one of the most beautiful and historic ceremony venues in Berkshire. As a Windsor wedding photographer, I’ve photographed countless weddings here, and it’s a venue that never fails to inspire me — elegant, full of light, and steeped in history.
Every wedding I capture at the Guildhall feels different, but what always stands out is how the building’s grandeur perfectly complements the intimacy of the day. Here are my favourite tips for capturing the magic of a Guildhall Windsor wedding, plus a few thoughts on the best nearby spots for celebrating afterwards.
1. The Exterior: Grand and instantly recognisable The Guildhall Windsor is iconic — with its grand Georgian columns, red doors, and graceful arches. It’s the perfect backdrop for your wedding photography and the ideal place for a big celebratory group photo.
One of my favourite moments to capture is the large group shot of over 100 wedding guests outside the Guildhall. It’s full of joy and energy — a real “we did it!” moment that looks incredible against the stately backdrop. The cobbled square offers plenty of space, and the raised pavement opposite gives me the perfect vantage point to fit everyone in beautifully.
Even on cloudy or rainy days, the building photographs wonderfully. The covered portico offers soft natural light for portraits while keeping everyone dry — very handy for an English wedding!
2. The Interior: Elegant, Warm, and Full of History. Once you step inside, you’ll immediately feel the atmosphere. The Council Chamber, where most ceremonies are held, is grand yet intimate — filled with golden chandeliers, rich wood panelling, and historic oil paintings. The light filtering through the tall sash windows adds a romantic glow, perfect for ceremony and portrait photography alike.
The staircase is another hidden gem. With its sweeping curve, ornate banister, and traditional portraits lining the walls, it’s ideal for elegant couple portraits or a quiet moment together away from the bustle. The golden light and warm tones create that classic Windsor look that couples love.
Everywhere you turn, the Guildhall offers texture and detail — from the crests on the walls to the antique furniture — making it a dream setting for storytelling wedding photography.
3. My Camera Setup: Flexible and Creative - When photographing weddings at the Guildhall, I work with two cameras. My main setup includes a 24–70mm lens, which is perfect for capturing everything from wide ceremony shots to intimate close-ups without disrupting the moment.
On my second camera, I use a telephoto prime lens, which performs beautifully in low light and allows me to capture natural, emotional close-ups from a distance. This combination gives me the freedom to tell the full story of your day — from the grandeur of the room to the little moments of laughter and love that make it yours.
4. Embrace the Royal History:
The Guildhall Windsor isn’t just any venue; it’s where Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles got married! You can subtly weave that royal connection into your gallery by capturing small details: the crests, the framed portraits, or the ornate ceilings.
Outside, the surrounding area — from the cobbled High Street to the view of Windsor Castle — adds a touch of grandeur to your storytelling.
5. After the Ceremony: The Harte & Garter - After saying “I do,” many couples cross the road to celebrate at The Hart and Garter Hotel. Overlooking Windsor Castle, it’s a gorgeous setting for a wedding reception — with elegant interiors, high ceilings, and large windows that flood the rooms with natural light.
It’s ideal for relaxed, documentary-style photography: guests chatting over champagne, heartfelt speeches, and that first dance framed by the castle lights outside. As the sun sets, the view from the windows creates the perfect backdrop for a few romantic evening portraits.
5. Useful Links for Planning Your Windsor Wedding. If you’re starting to plan your Guildhall Windsor wedding, here are a few links you might find helpful:
- Windsor Guildhall – Official venue information, photos, and booking details.
- The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Registrars – For ceremony bookings and legal requirements.
- The Hart and Garter Hotel – Reception venue with stunning views of Windsor Castle.
Final Thoughts: Photographing a wedding at the Guildhall Windsor is always such a privilege.
Between its historic interiors, sweeping staircase, and the joy of guests spilling out onto the cobbled square, it’s a venue that never fails to deliver incredible images.
Combine that with a reception at The Harte & Garter, and you have a truly unforgettable Windsor wedding day.
